Importing arms and munitions
The Export and Import Permits Act (EIPA) controls Canada’s system of import controls for military and strategic goods and technology. They are defined in Canada’s Import Control List (ICL).
- Military goods and firearms are controlled by paragraphs 70-73 and paragraph 91 of the ICL
- Chemical Weapons Convention items are controlled by paragraph 74 of the ICL
An import permit is required before importing any item included on the ICL. There are some exemptions for imports from the United States.
For more examples of these exemptions please refer to section D.5 of the export and brokering controls handbook.
To apply, you must use the NEXCOL system.
Other regulations may still apply
Getting an import permit from Global Affairs Canada (GAC) or if your product is not listed on the ICL does not mean there are no other required steps to import your good.
You may still need other permits or authorizations under other Canadian or provincial laws and regulations.
