Traditional careers
Public servants work in Canada, mainly in the Ottawa-Gatineau region.
They work on global issues or as specialists in their chosen field of study, such as:
- policy
- programming
- finance
- human resources
- security
- information technology
- communications

Rotational careers
Members of Canada’s foreign service are known as rotational or diplomatic employees. They spend approximately half of their career abroad, within Canada’s extensive network of missions—embassies, consulates and high commissions, for example—and the other half in Canada (at Headquarters in the National Capital Region or regional offices throughout Canada).
